Nimbochromis livingstoni - Adult
Nimbochromis livingstonii (formerly Haplochromis livingstonii ) is a colorful, predatory fish from Lake Malawi. It is silvery white with a brown blotched pattern as a juvenile. Females and submissive males retain the camouflage markings through adulthood. Breeding males will show shades of blue with a yellow-orange anal fin. They enjoy a meaty diet and may make a meal out of smaller fish. Their hunting tactics are particularly enjoyable, as they will lie on the bottom of the tank, motionless, and wait for prey to approach. Once close enough, the livingstoni will ambush the unfortunate victim. They can be kept with other cichlids of similar size and temperament. These cichlids are mouthbrooders and the females will hold eggs and fry in her mouth for several weeks. Because of their large adult size they will need a large, roomy tank to provide adequate swimming room.
