Rineloricaria parva Whiptail Loricarid

The common whiptail catfish is a peaceful, hardy fish that is well suited to most community aquariums. It is a wedge-shaped fish with a wider anterior portion that steadily slopes inward to form a long slender tail. The body is light brown with varying degrees of irregular dark blotches and bands and is covered with hard scales. Male whiptail catfish can be distinguished from females by close inspection of the gills and pectoral fins. In adult males both areas have sharp serrated edges. Whiptail catfish are relatively easy to breed in captivity. They spawn in rock crevices, caves, or pipes. Males care for the eggs until they hatch. Whiptail catfish do best on a diet of algae, sinking algae wafers, and rotting driftwood, as well as fresh vegetables once or twice a week. Some good plant matter that can be offered is leaf lettuce, cucumber, and zucchini.
