Farlowella vittata Royal Farlowella
The Royal Farlowella is a slim, elongated fish that has thick, armor-like scales. Its body is brown with a dark brown irregular band that runs the length of each flank. It is a relative of the well-known plecostomus. There are two species that are commonly labeled as Royal Farlowellas; Sturisoma panamense and S. aureum . S. aureum only grows to be about 6 inches in length, and has a long filament extension on the tip of the dorsal fin. This species is also less tolerant of high temperatures, and should be kept at a temperature range of 68 to 78 degrees F. S. panamense lacks the long dorsal extension, and should be kept in a temperature range of about 74 to 84 degrees F. Both species are omnivorous, and will consume both meaty and vegetable matter they find by scavenging. They rasp algae from the sufraces of rocks, glass, and other decorations, and will accept sinking wafers or pellets and fresh green vegetables as well. Royal Farlowellas are peaceful and can be kept with most community fish. They are not aggressive feeders, and may be out-competed for food if kept with larger or more aggressive scavengers. They may damage aquatic plants, so use caution if keeping them in planted tanks. Provide some hiding places such as driftwood, rock crevices, or other decorations as a safe daytime retreat.
